Tabitha Meals on Wheels Celebrates Four Million

Tabitha, your answer for Elder Care, recently marked the delivery of its four-millionth meal.

Joined by First Lady of Nebraska Susanne Shore, along with other local dignitaries and “celebrity” volunteer groups from community partner organizations including Assurity Life Insurance Company, Lexus of Lincoln, Southwood Lutheran Church, Thrivent Financial, Union bank and Runza, which also generously provided the noontime meal to more than 500 clients, a day of celebration was held last month to recognize the remarkable milestone in Lincoln’s only Meals on Wheels program.

Tabitha Meals on Wheels began in 1967 as the first service of its kind in Lancaster County. Unlike many other Meals on Wheels programs around the country, Tabitha Meals on Wheels continues to say yes to all those in need, regardless of their circumstances or resources, and has not capped program numbers despite a 30 percent growth rate in the last five years.

Access to proper nutrition is often one of the last factors allowing Elders to remain safely at home, and Tabitha’s service provides and invaluable face-to-face safety check, as well, for many medically vulnerable individuals who may not see another person all day.

With the support of generous donors and a volunteer army of hundreds, Tabitha Meals on Wheels is proud to serve Lincoln-area Elders and their families by protecting independence and helping keep health care costs lower for the community at large.

As a nonprofit organization serving 28 Nebraska counties, Tabitha’s love embraces a society where everyone is valued and empowered to live life to the fullest, with compassionate at-home support, innovative living communities, exceptional rehabilitation, health care and hospice services.
